OUR MISSION: Every day, the Radio Reading Service audibly "delivers" the daily newspaper and various print-only materials to the visually impaired and other print-disabled subscribers in western Ohio.
How does Radio Reading Service work? Every day, volunteers read the daily newspapers and various other print-only materials "on the air" for those individuals who are somehow unable to read for themselves. Subscribers include the visually impaired, the physically disabled, and the learning disabled. We consider ourselves a "supplement" to other radio and television news, covering a wider variety of topics and sources.
How can I hear Radio Reading Service? Radio Reading Service broadcasts are only heard over a "sub-carrier" FM channel that is received by our subscribers on special radios we provide. There is no cost to our subscribers for their radio receivers, but we do encourage donations from those able to contribute. Radio Reading Service Programming can also be heard on the SAP channel of Public Television Stations WPTD and WPTO (Channels 16 and 14). "SAP" stands for Secondary Audio Program, and is standard on many newer television sets, or can be heard using a special signal converter box.
How is Radio Reading Service funded? Radio Reading Service is a non-profit organization primarily funded by donations from community businesses, civic groups, foundations, and private citizens, with a small subsidy from the State of Ohio. We depend on the continued support of many generous benefactors and volunteers. Radio Reading Service is truly a community-wide effort.
In 2003, Radio Reading Service became part of Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley, which conducts a wide variety of fundraising activities to provide funding for its many worthwhile public service programs, including Radio Reading Service.
Who makes it happen? Radio Reading Service employs a small professional staff to direct our programming and coordinate the energies of about 60 volunteers who read the news and other vital information on the air every day and help our listeners in many other ways. Other volunteers provide technical assistance, serve on our board of directors, help with outreach to subscribers, fundraising, and promoting community awareness of our programs.
Radio Reading Service encourages participation from all corners of our community. Our annual meeting, held during the first quarter of the year, is open to any and all guests. The Board of Trustees of WORDS is comprised of subscribers, volunteers, and others interested in helping Radio Reading Service serves everyone who needs us.
