Vision Services

  • Orientation and Mobility Evaluation and Teaching for Persons with Visual Impairments
    • This program is designed to assess an individual’s ability to move safely, confidently, and efficiently throughout his or her environment and maximize their potential to travel independently.  If training is recommended, it may include, but is not limited to the use of a long cane, optical or non-optical aids, and the use of public transportation.  Contact:  Kim Carr, Ext. 572
  • Independent Living Program
    • A program designed to provide services to individuals who are 55 years or older and have a visual impairment.  A functional low vision evaluation is performed in the individual’s home, where both optical and non-optical aids are assessed in order to help the individual improve his or her activities of daily living.  Contact:  Kim Carr, Ext. 572
  • Low Vision Assessment
    • Individuals who experience sight loss are able to receive a Low Vision Assessment.  Following a clinical assessment of the individual’s vision, the individual’s needs for low vision aids is evaluated and recommendations for low vision aids are made.  Contact:  Kim Carr, Ext 572
  • Computer Skills Training
    • One-on-one computer skills training is provided within a state-of-the-art computer lab.  Individualized instruction in business application software, as well as computer access software is provided.  Contact:  Doug Beitzel, Ext. 394
  • Job Development and Placement
    • Specialized Job Development and Placement staff provide job seeking skills instruction and placement assistance to persons who are blind or visually impaired.  Contact:  Beverly Via, Ext. 323
  • WORDS
    • WORDS, or the Miami Valley Radio Reading Services, provides information and current events to individuals who are blind or visually impaired.  Volunteers read articles from local and national newspapers, host interview shows, and transmit locally produces features over a radio frequency.  Persons throughout the community receive this broadcast through special radio receivers.  Contact:  Jane McBride:  341-5210
  • Ohio Telephone Reader
    • Quickly by dialing our Telephone Reader Service, a person who is blind or visually impaired can quickly get the local and world news that they are interested in at any time.  For a three-minute demonstration dial 1-888-333-8181 toll free.  Select an Ohio region and enter code 5555.  Listen to a menu and make your choice.  While listening to an article, press 5 to hear a list of browsing options.  Contact:  Jane McBride, 461-4800  Ext. 513
  • Adaptive Equipment Scholarships for Persons with Visual Impairments
    • Through a generous donation from the Dayton Foundation, persons with disabilities are able to receive up to $500 toward the purchase of adaptive equipment and assistive technology.  Contact Kevin Leonard, 461-3305
  • Free Eyeglasses and Vision Exams
    • Goodwill’s Technology Resource Center is a designated Prevent Blindness Ohio application site.  TRC assists individuals in completing application forms and coordinating the entire referral process.  Contact Kevin Leonard, 461-3305
